Organic produce...

I hope you’re all having a great week. The weather has been amazing, with Tuesday being a real t-shirt and shorts day. It bodes well for a great summer ahead of us. Fingers crossed for a great one. Labour Weekend was huge in the Bay, as usual, with lots of visitors to the area. Each year I am amazed at the sheer number of people who travel to enjoy our little slice of paradise.

One question I frequently get asked, is whether our boxes are organic, or would we do an organic box? This is always a hard question to answer, as it is almost impossible to gauge the response to an organic box, and as we found out with our vegetarian box, with the number of orders received fell well below what we needed to keep doing them. In saying that though, it doesn’t mean we write off organics, but we rather include them in the everyday box, whenever we can source them. Being based in Hawkes Bay really helps. So, this week I am going to introduce you to one of our suppliers for fresh greens. Clyde and the team at Epicurean Supplies have been supplying us with our fresh herbs and leafy greens. These guys and girl grow an amazing variety of organic vegetables and herbs. All grown in Heretaunga, and picked and delivered to us on the same day. You just can’t get fresher. Clyde began Epicurean Supplies in 1995, on 2ha of land, and now has 15-20 staff, growing up to 100 different crops over 22ha, from micro herbs to Cavolo Nero. Epicurean has a fantastic policy of working with nature, as opposed to fighting it.

The benefit of keeping our supplier local, is it gives us the ability to go to the grower and make sure their business fits into how we see ourselves, with fresh, natural quality ingredients, and I am happy to say that Epicurean more than fits the bill.

I hope you enjoy this weeks menu, we are trying something a bit new with the Beef Short Ribs in the first three nights, so make sure you let us know how it goes. Have a great week, and enjoy the sunshine!

Happy Eating,

- Paul
